What is bonding?
Bonding refers to the application of tooth-colored composite resin to close gaps, repair chips, or slightly lengthen your teeth. This is an alternative approach to porcelain veneers and can be accomplished in a single visit.
For smaller changes, bonding is a great solution because your tooth’s enamel doesn’t need to be removed. Keep in mind that bonding isn’t as strong as porcelain, making it a slightly weaker option when compared to veneers. Bonding is great to make small changes to your teeth after you’ve had a teeth straightening treatment such as Invisalign®.
How is bonding done?
The staff at Enamel General and Cosmetic Dentistry uses a shade guide to select the composite resin color that most closely matches the color of your natural tooth. After a color has been selected, Dr. Kabaklian slightly etches or abrades the surface of your tooth to roughen it. He then lightly coats your tooth with a conditioning liquid that helps the bonding material stick.
Once your tooth is finally prepared, Dr. Kabaklian applies the tooth-colored, putty-like resin. The resin is smoothed and molded until it's the desired shape. Dr. Kabaklian then uses an ultraviolet laser or light to harden the material.
After the bonding material has hardened, Dr. Kabaklian trims, shapes, and sculpts it to the proper shape. Finally, he polishes the material until it’s the same color and sheen as the rest of the tooth’s surface.
You can typically expect the procedure to take 30 minutes to an hour.
How do you care for your bonds?
There are a number of steps you can take to care for your bonds. Avoid resin-staining substances such as:
• |
Tea
|
• |
Coffee
|
• |
Juice
|
• |
Wine
|
• |
Tobacco products |
To minimize or prevent stains, you should avoid eating or drinking stain-causing foods for the first 48 hours after your bonding procedure. Brushing your teeth multiple times a day, flossing, and having your teeth professionally cleaned by a dental hygienist on a regular basis will also help keep your bonds looking white and shiny.
Bonding refers to using white fillings to close gaps, repair chips, or lengthen teeth slightly. This is an alternative to porcelain veneers. For smaller changes bonding is a great alternative to porcelain because enamel doesn’t need to be removed. White filling isn’t as strong as porcelain so bonding is a little weaker than veneers but can last a long time if done correctly. Bonding is great for making small changes to the teeth after Clear Correct treatment is done.
