What are dental implants?
• | A dental implant provides a base for a durable and natural-looking false tooth where a natural tooth is missing. Implants can replace a single tooth, multiple teeth or all of your teeth. A dental implant consists of a titanium screw that’s surgically implanted into the jawbone beneath your gums. The implant fuses to your jawbone, and an abutment is attached, providing substantial support for a bridge or crown. |
• | To be a good candidate for dental implants, you must have enough bone to support the implant and healthy gums. |

What are the benefits of dental implants?
Dental implants offer a number of advantages over other tooth-replacement methods. Dental implants:
• | Look, feel, and function like your natural teeth |
• | Are low-maintenance and don’t need to be removed to brush your teeth |
• | Don’t interfere with speaking, eating, or smiling the way dentures do |
• | Allow you to bite and chew naturally, with limited restrictions on what you can eat |
• | Can’t get cavities like your natural teeth can |
• | Can last a lifetime with proper care and hygiene |
With dental implants, your adjacent teeth don’t need to be prepared or ground down to hold your new replacement tooth or teeth in place, which is often necessary with some dental bridges. Dental implants can last a lifetime as long as you receive regular dental checkups and maintain proper dental hygiene. They are a great alternative to dentures.
What should I consider before getting a dental implant?
It’s important to recognize that receiving a dental implant can be a long process, potentially taking up to eight months to complete.
The first step is to make sure there’s enough bone remaining in your jaw to support implants. If not, the site will have to be grafted, which takes about four months to heal. If there is enough bone, Dr. Kabaklian can place the implant, then it takes about four months for the bone to fuse with it, so it can hold the crown securely for years to come.
Dental Implants vs. Mini Implants
Losing teeth, either mentally or physically, is traumatic. The good thing is dental implants can help restore your smile, giving you the lost functionality and confidence that people with full teeth are set to enjoy. Many people have realized improved daily function, confidence, and excellent oral health with teeth restoration. The two types of implants are traditional dental implants and mini implants. At Enamel General and Cosmetic Dentistry we help patients determine the effect of the dental implant type that suits them. We have experienced staff with extensive knowledge of dental implants that you can count on for a successful dental implant procedure.
