What causes tooth discoloration?

A variety of factors can cause discoloration and staining of your teeth. Usually, it’s a result of what you’re eating and drinking on a regular basis. The most common culprits include:
•  Berries
•  Citrus fruits
•  Soda
•  Balsamic vinegar
•  Coffee, tea, and wine
•  Cigarettes and other tobacco products

What’s the difference between in-office and at-home teeth whitening?

The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry reports that the safest and most effective whitening treatment is custom-fitted mouth trays created by your dentist. Dr. Kabaklian offers a variety of teeth-whitening options, including both in-office and take-home treatments, and will help identify the best one for your particular case.

For at-home treatments, Dr. Kabaklian provides prescription-strength whitening trays. These trays conform to your smile without the need for impressions or custom molds. Depending on your case, you can typically expect to wear the trays for up to 10 days, 30-60 minutes a day. Along with the trays, you’ll receive a one-year supply of prescription strength peroxide.

It’s common to experience some sensitivity during or after the whitening process. If this happens to you, Dr. Kabaklian will provide instructions on how to proceed.

Why don’t store-bought teeth whiteners work as well as prescription-strength alternatives?

You may have tried store-bought whitening kits in the past, only to be disappointed with the results. Here’s why:

You can’t bleach over tartar.

The peroxides in whiteners only whiten tooth enamel, not tartar (the yellow/brown layer of hardened plaque that builds up on your teeth). To get the most out of whitening, get a thorough cleaning first.

Over-the-counter peroxides are often not strong enough to do the job.

The average concentration of peroxides in store-bought teeth whiteners, even “extra strength” alternatives, is 5-10%, while many one-time in-office treatments go up to 40%. The at-home kits offered at Enamel General and Cosmetic Dentistry feature a range of 16-38% peroxide concentrations, for a fraction of in-office treatment costs.

They’re so uncomfortable, you don’t use them regularly.

Ill-fitting trays irritate soft tissue and whiten unevenly. Strips are difficult to get into place and hard to keep away from sensitive gums. Both are unpleasant and unlikely to be used consistently.

If you suffer from stained or discolored teeth and want a brighter smile, professional teeth whitening could be right for you. Call 949-991-2499 or book an appointment online for a consultation with Dr. Kabaklian.
