What’s the difference between in-office and at-home teeth whitening?

Why don’t store-bought teeth whiteners work as well as prescription-strength alternatives?
You may have tried store-bought whitening kits in the past, only to be disappointed with the results. Here’s why:
You can’t bleach over tartar.
The peroxides in whiteners only whiten tooth enamel, not tartar (the yellow/brown layer of hardened plaque that builds up on your teeth). To get the most out of whitening, get a thorough cleaning first.
Over-the-counter peroxides are often not strong enough to do the job.
The average concentration of peroxides in store-bought teeth whiteners, even “extra strength” alternatives, is 5-10%, while many one-time in-office treatments go up to 40%.
