Common Risks Associated with Implants

Although these risks are rare, it is wise to be aware of them to get immediate treatment before the problem worsens. Some common risks include:

Infections in the Gums

An infection is more likely if some bacteria is left behind from the extracted damaged tooth. It can also occur if the implant placement is incorrect, with a gap between the bone and the implant. The gums might appear swollen and red and might leak pus or bleed. The infection of the jawbone is rare but can lead to bone loss.

Damage to the Blood Vessels or Teeth

During the treatment, the surrounding blood vessels and teeth could get damaged. While this is rare, it is important to immediately consult the dentist to prevent further issues.

Nerve Damage

Never damage is another risk that could occur during the implant treatment in the lower jaw. This typically happens when there is no gap between the main nerve and the implant. It can cause tingling and numbness in the tongue, lips, cheek, or gums. Nerve damage during a dental implant procedure is rare, and the treatment requires the removal of the implant to allow the reconnection of nerve fibers.

Sinus Problems

This problem might happen when the implant is placed on the upper jaw. If there isn’t much bone for the implant to be placed, the bone is perforated, which could damage the sinus and cause a sinus infection. It can be treated by removing the implant and repairing the bone before the new implant can be placed.

Tips to Care for Dental Implants

It is essential to take care of the implants to reduce the chances of any risks. Here are a few aftercare tips:
•  Brush teeth with a soft-bristled brush twice every day, focusing on the gumline.
•  Flossing each day is also important to eliminate any bits from between the teeth. The dentist might suggest interdental brushes for some patients to get rid of bacteria and plaque that could otherwise result in peri-implantitis, an inflammatory condition.
•  Consume calcium-rich foods, like kale, yogurt, cheese, and milk, or take calcium supplements.
•  Avoid eating hard candy, ice, and other hard substances that could damage the crown.
•  Regularly visit the dentist for a deep cleaning and examination.

Dental implants have a high success rate but might not be the ideal solution for everyone. It is wise to have an initial consultation with the dentist to determine the proper dental treatment, associated risks, and alternatives.
